From the Bureau to the back office.
Douglas Small spent fourteen years as an FBI Special Agent working complex white-collar cases, including the Enron Task Force. The habits formed there, every dollar traced to a source document, every conclusion written for someone who is not an accountant, still shape how SMALL works today.
He then advised law firms and global companies on fraud, forensic accounting and anti-corruption matters at Navigant Consulting, Capstone Advisory Group and Berkeley Research Group, leading investigations on six continents and providing expert reports and testimony in federal and state courts.
He founded SMALL after watching attorney friends leave Big Law to start their own firms and struggle with the finance side. Today SMALL runs the back office for 15+ boutique law firms and supports counsel on forensic matters, with Lucy MacGinnis running the operation day to day.
On fraud, forensic accounting and compliance.
Douglas has written and spoken on fraud and FCPA compliance for Westlaw’s White Collar Crime Journal, Ethisphere and the National Law Journal. Articles for law firm owners and litigators appear in Insights on this site, starting with a plain-English guide to three-way trust reconciliation.
